In light of the COVID-19 crisis and the introduction of the Canada Emergency Response Benefit, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has made it easier for Canadians to sign up for its direct deposit service. With direct deposit, you will receive your tax refunds and benefit payments faster and directly into your Encompass account.

Do I need to register separately for each payment?

No. Once registered, you're enrolled for Direct Deposit for any and all types of government payments that you may be entitled to.


When will the changes be updated in my CRA account?

The direct deposit information should take up to 2 business days to appear in your CRA account.


I already have direct deposit for my CRA account. Do I need to do anything?

No action is required. You'll continue to receive payments made to you by the CRA to your existing account.

If you want to change your CRA direct deposit information, complete the set up in online banking and any future amounts will be deposited to this new account, replacing any previous CRA direct deposit information.


What if I need to change my contact information with the CRA?

To change contact information provided to the Canada Revenue Agency or to remove direct deposit from your CRA account, call the CRA at 1.800.959.8281.


How do I know that I have received my direct deposit payment from the CRA?

You can verify that the payment has been received by checking your banking statement on the account you used to sign up for direct deposit. Your payment amount will be deposited directly into the account.

You can also confirm that the payment was sent by the CRA by logging into CRA’s My Account. But, please use option 2, which will make the process easier.


Fraud prevention:
The CRA or Encompass Credit Union will never send you an email, text or Interac e-transfer to a link asking for your personal information to receive your benefit payment or refund. These are scams and taxpayers should never respond to these fraudulent communications or click on any of the links provided. If you submit multiple requests to update your direct deposit information, the most recent enrolment you complete will become the account on file with the CRA. Direct deposits will only be made into one account, at one financial institution.
